  21. What's New in Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 for Macintosh

  24. Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 now runs when QuickDraw GX is enabled.
  25. Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 now includes full ATM(TM) 3.8.2.

  27. Should I Use Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 or 2.0.1? 
  28. ============================================

  30. There are no feature differences between Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 and
  31. Acrobat Reader 2.0.1. You should choose to use the version
  32. appropriate to your system configuration. If you are
  33. redistributing the Reader, you should consider the system
  34. configurations of your intended audience. 
  35.  
  36.  o If your system is a 68XXX-based Macintosh without QuickDraw GX,
  37.    use Acrobat Reader 2.0r3. Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 has smaller disk
  38.    and memory requirements, but supports fewer platform
  39.    configurations. 
  40.  o If your system is a Power Macintosh or you have QuickDraw GX
  41.    enabled, use Acrobat Reader 2.0.1. Acrobat Reader 2.0.1
  42.    supports more systems, but has greater disk and memory
  43.    requirements. 
  44.  
  45. Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 includes ATM LE. To enable Acrobat Reader
  46. 2.0r3 and ATM LE to fit on a single floppy, ATM LE does not
  47. include support for QuickDraw GX, Kanji, or 68000-based
  48. Macintoshes, and does not have native Power Macintosh code for
  49. improved performance on Power Macintoshes like the full version of
  50. ATM which is included with Acrobat Reader 2.0.1. The Acrobat
  51. Reader 2.0r3 application is not compatible with QuickDraw GX. 
  52.  
  53. Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 supports QuickDraw GX and includes full
  54. ATM(TM) 3.8.2. 
  55.  
  56. Before Installation
  57. ===================
  58.  
  59. The installation process is controlled by the Acrobat Installer
  60. application. This installation will create a folder named "Adobe
  61. Acrobat 2.0" at the root level on the selected hard disk and
  62. install the new "Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0.1" application and support
  63. files. 
  64.  
  65. If you already have a folder named "Adobe Acrobat 2.0" at the root
  66. level on the selected hard disk, the installation will remove the
  67. outdated "Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0" application in the "Adobe
  68. Acrobat 2.0" folder and replace it with the updated "Acrobat(TM)
  69. Reader 2.0.1" application and support files. 
  70.  
  71. Note: If you would like the installation to update your existing
  72. Acrobat Reader 2.0 installation but it is not currently in a
  73. folder named "Adobe Acrobat 2.0" at the root level of your disk,
  74. do the following: 
  75.  
  76. 1. Double click on the hard disk icon to open a window to the root
  77.    level of your disk. 
  78. 2. Drag your current folder containing the Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0
  79.    application into the window you opened in (1) above. 
  80. 3. Rename the folder you just moved in (2) to "Adobe Acrobat 2.0"
  81.    if it does not already have this name. 
  82. 4. Run the installation following the instructions below. 
  83.  
  84. The Installer will quit any running applications (after prompting
  85. you first). 
  86.  
  87. System Requirements
  88. ===================
  89.  
  90.  o Macintosh computer with 68020 (Macintosh II series) or greater
  91.    processor 
  92.  o MacOS 7.0 or greater 
  93.  o 2 MB application RAM 
  94.  o 4 MB hard disk space 
  95.  o FDHD floppy disk drive or CD-ROM player if installing from
  96.    physical media 
  97.  o If QuickDraw GX is enabled, Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 requires
  98.    desktop printing be turned on to print 
  99.  o Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 does not support Kanji or 68000-based
  100.    Macintoshes 
  101.  
  102. Installation instructions
  103. =========================
  104.  
  105. To Install Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0.1: 
  106.  
  107.  o Double-click on the "AcroRead.mac" icon and then follow the
  108.    instructions. 
  109.  o See "How Does The Installer Handle Adobe Type Manager (ATM) and
  110.    Fonts?" below for information on ATM and font issues. 
  111.  o See "How much memory to give Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0.1?" for
  112.    information on optimizing performance. 
  113.  o See the "List of files installed" below for a complete listing
  114.    of the files installed.

  116. How Does The Installer Handle Adobe Type Manager (ATM) and Fonts?
  117. ================================================================
  118.  
  119. If ATM 3.8.1 or earlier is installed on your computer, the Acrobat
  120. Reader 2.0.1 installer will update it with ATM 3.8.2. 
  121.  
  122. If you do not have a version of ATM installed on your computer and
  123. you do not have QuickDraw GX enabled, the Acrobat Reader 2.0.1
  124. installer places a copy of ATM 3.8.2 in the Adobe Acrobat 2.0 /
  125. Fonts folder. This private copy of ATM is recognized and used only
  126. by Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 and uses memory only when Acrobat Reader
  127. is running. 
  128.  
  129. If TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol, or Zapf
  130. Dingbats are installed on your system, they are not replaced nor
  131. moved. If you are using Type 1 versions of these fonts, updated
  132. versions of the Type 1 fonts Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol,
  133. and Zapf Dingbats will be installed in the appropriate location
  134. for your version of System 7. 
  135.  
  136. If you have QuickDraw GX installed and enabled, the Acrobat
  137. Exchange 2.0.1 installer will install ATM 3.8.2 in the System's
  138. Control Panels folder. It is not possible to use the private
  139. version of ATM with QuickDraw GX. 
  140.  
  141. Depending on whether QuickDraw GX is enabled at the time of
  142. installation, different versions of the Adobe Acrobat substitution
  143. fonts Adobe Sans MM and Adobe Serif MM (and perhaps other Type 1
  144. fonts) are installed. Later, if QuickDraw GX is either enabled or
  145. disabled, you will need to re-install Acrobat Reader 2.0.1. 
  146.  
  147. If you installed System 7.5 and QuickDraw GX after installing
  148. Acrobat Reader 2.0.1, you will need to reinstall Acrobat Reader
  149. 2.0.1. The QuickDraw GX 1.0 installer replaces ATM 3.8.2 with ATM
  150. GX (ATM 3.7), which is not compatible with Acrobat Reader 2.0.1;
  151. the QuickDraw GX 1.1 installer includes ATM 3.8.2, so this is not
  152. an issue. 
  153.  
  154. How much memory to give Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0.1?
  155. =================================================
  156.  
  157. Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0, as it is pre-configured, is set to require
  158. at least 2048K bytes of memory and to prefer 3100K bytes. To
  159. change this, quit the Acrobat(TM) Reader 2.0.1 application if it
  160. is running and select its icon using the Finder. Then select "Get
  161. Info" from the File menu. In the Memory Requirements section of
  162. the dialog, the "factory" default for Minimum size is set to 2048K
  163. and should not be changed. The Preferred memory size is 3100K and
  164. may be reduced as described below. 
  165.  
  166. If you are using ATM 3.8.2 in the Adobe Acrobat 2.0 / Fonts
  167. folder, ATM allocates approximately 1000K of RAM from the Acrobat
  168. Reader 2.0.1 partition if there is sufficient space. If there is
  169. not sufficient space, ATM attempts to allocate RAM from your
  170. System (MultiFinder) memory (except on Power Macintosh
  171. configurations, which always allocate the required RAM from the
  172. Acrobat Reader partition. 
  173.  
  174. If you are using ATM in the System / Control Panels folder you can
  175. reduce the Preferred size by 1000K for 680x0 processors (non-Power
  176. Macintosh processors). 
  177.  
  178. Like any Macintosh program, increasing the memory size will
  179. benefit performance and increase the number and size of documents
  180. you may have open at once. Setting the "Preferred size" to 4000 (K
  181. bytes) should be sufficient for all but the most complex
  182. documents. 
  183.  
  184. Troubleshooting 
  185. ================
  186.  
  187. If you experience problems, consider the following: 
  188.  
  189.  o If you downloaded the Reader from an online service or internet
  190.    site, check that the file transferred properly. Adobe's World
  191.    Wide Web site at http://www.adobe.com/ will list the correct
  192.    size of the binhexed version of the Macintosh 2.0.1 Reader.
  193.    Corrupted archives have been reported to issue a message
  194.    "requires 68020 or greater processor to run" on Macintosh IIx
  195.    systems. 
  196.  o Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 installs substitution fonts appropriate to
  197.    your system configuration at the time of installation. Later,
  198.    if you either enable or disable QuickDraw GX, you will need to
  199.    reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 to ensure that the correct
  200.    version of the fonts required by Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 are
  201.    installed in their proper locations. 
  202.  o If you installed System 7.5 and QuickDraw GX *after* installing
  203.    Acrobat Reader 2.0.1, you must reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.0.1.
  204.    The QuickDraw GX installer replaces ATM 3.8.2 with ATM GX (ATM
  205.    3.7), which is not compatible with Acrobat Reader 2.0.1. [The
  206.    QuickDraw GX 1.1 installer includes ATM 3.8.2, so this is not
  207.    an issue.] 
  208.  o If QuickDraw GX is enabled, Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 requires
  209.    desktop printing be turned on to print. Do not use the
  210.    QuickDraw GX Helper to turn off desktop printing. 
  211.  o See the QuickDraw GX Read Me for more details on QuickDraw GX
  212.    operation and compatibility. 
  213.  o Font Not Found - A font not found error may indicate that ATM
  214.    did not have enough memory to create a substitute font.
  215.    Increase the size of the ATM Font Cache from the ATM Control
  216.    Panel. 
  217.  o For best printing results, we recommend you use PSPrinter 8.2.1
  218.    (or later) driver from Adobe. PSPrinter 8.2.1 is not included
  219.    with Acrobat Reader. Contact Adobe at 1-800-521-1976 for
  220.    information on purchasing printer drivers. 
  221.  o If you are using the private copy of ATM in the Adobe Acrobat
  222.    2.0 Fonts folder (i.e. you do not have ATM installed in your
  223.    System's Control Panels folder) background printing is disabled
  224.    in the PSPrinter driver. 
  225.  o If you are printing to a PostScript Level 2 device using the
  226.    Adobe PSPrinter 8.X or Apple LaserWriter 8 printer drivers, you
  227.    need to update the Printer Info after selecting the printer
  228.    from the Chooser in order for the printer driver to recognize
  229.    the printer supports PostScript Level 2. If this is not done,
  230.    Acrobat Reader will not send PostScript Level 2 information to
  231.    the printer. During setup, make sure to select the specific
  232.    PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file for your particular
  233.    printer, do not selecet the "Generic" PPD if at all possible. 
  234.  o Please note that the Acrobat Reader 2.0.1 does not support
  235.    Kanji or 68000-based Macintoshes.
